ACTRESS, author, comedian - Sara Pascoe is happy to accept all these descriptions But the one thing she’s adamant about, she’s definitely not an expert.

Last year Sara wrote the book Animal: The Autobiography of a Female Body which looked at the evolution of the female body and how it is regarded in society.

She also set out on her latest stand-up tour, loosely based on the book. And now she’s heading back out on the road to continue the Animal tour which comes to the Lowry, Salford Quays next Friday.

“The live show is definitely a comedy show,” said Sara. “There are some similarities with the book but when you are writing a book you know you have more space and can argue a point properly. The show is very much about making people laugh.”

So among her thoughts on sexuality, evolution and body image, Animal the show also includes references to Jason Donovan, Ru Paul and Harry Potter.

It will also include material which didn’t feature when Sara toured with it last year.

“Any show will mutate over time,” she said. “Also you want to keep it fresh, you don’t want to be bored with what you are saying.

“Compared to some people, my tours are quite short and reasonable. You do get people doing 180 dates and by the end it’s difficult to be excited about what you are talking about whereas mine are 30 or 40 dates which is completely doable.”

Sara’s book Animal was acclaimed by both critics and academics.

“As a comic I could have just written a funny book,” she said. “But I was really into researching that stuff anyway. The beauty of my life is that I have time during the day, I have time to research.

“I miss university and academia and I wanted to put as much information in as I could into a really easy to read format because I think it’s really important.

“Not all of us have time to read science books and there are things we should know and think about.”

Sara added that appearing on shows such as Mock the Week, 8 Out of 10 Cats and Would I Lie to You? has helped her.

“Sometimes it does feel like that if you do a little bit of television, you suddenly have the ears of people which is a fortunate position and I wanted to use that for positive things.

“But I have to be very careful to shy away from being seen as any kind of expert. I’m not a scientist, I’ve not carried out any experiments.

“I am open to being proved wrong You can have a very passionately held theory but someone could come along and say ‘actually we have studied this and you’re wrong’.

“I’m a comedian, I wouldn’t ever want to set myself up as an expert.”

Having said that, with Animal due out in paperback this month, Sara’s already researching her follow-up book.

“It’s a sort of follow-up in a way,” she said. “I’ll be looking at the evolution of the male body but also looking into the effects of pornography and the whole question of sex workers.”

In addition, she will also be completing her stand-up tour, writing a new show to take to the Edinburgh Festival, adapting Pride and Prejudice for the theatre and starting filming a new series of the comedy series W1A.

“I’m just a lazy cow really,” she laughed.
