A NEW comedy night which has proved a massive hit in London is to come to Manchester for the first time.

The Suspiciously Cheap Comedy Show is the brainchild of members of acclaimed comedy sketch shows Gein’s Family Giftshop and Goose.

It has been running for the past two years in London and regularly attracts audiences of over 250.

Now it will launch with a special show at the New Adelphi Theatre, part of the Salford University campus.

Already lined up are Edinburgh Comedy Award winner Adam Riches and sell out sensation Luisa Omielan. Plus Gein’s Comedy Giftshop and Goose will also try out new sketches during the course of the evening which will be hosted by Kiri Pritchard-McLean.

And, in keeping with the show’s title, tickets are just £5.

James Meehan, a member of Gein’s Comedy Giftshop, said: “We are holding the first show to see what kind of response we get.

“We would love to bring it to Manchester on a regular basis. The aim is to book the biggest acts for the lowest prices. In the London show we have had various award winners and comedians well known from TV.

“It’s a very friendly night which is aimed at comedy lovers, people who appreciate their comedy.”

Often well-known names will use the show as a way of trying out new material before embarking on a major tour.

“We had Greg Davies in London recently who did a slot to test out material for his tour,” said James.

Previous line-ups in London have included Daniel Kitson, Tim Key, James Acaster, The Pajama Men and Sara Pascoe.

The first show will have a special meaning for all those taking part - they are all graduates from Salford University.

“We’re getting the opportunity to use the university’s new venue which is a great space for comedy,” he said.

“I think sometimes people can be put off going to a comedy night but our shows are not mean spirited,” he said. “We like to think that we are offering something very different.

“We’re delighted to have Luisa and Adam for the first show.”

Luisa Omielan’s debut show solo show, What Would Beyoncé Do? has had had seven sell out runs at London’s Soho Theatre and her follow-up show follow-up show Am I Right Ladies? toured the UK.

Adam’s show Bring Me the Head of Adam Riches won the Fosters Comedy Award at the Edinburgh Festival before later transferring to the Soho Theatre in London,

“We will be announcing a third act in the near future,” said James.

“We also have a couple of dates pencilled in but we just need to see how it goes so I hope comedy lovers will come along and support us.”
