IF there is one man you'd want on your side in a pub quiz that would definitely be comedian Paul Sinha.

Paul, who comes to Darwen Library Theatre next Saturday, is known to TV viewers for being one of 'The Chasers' on the daytime quiz show The Chase.

Paul has been one of four 'experts' who take on members of the public in the award-winning show for the past five years. And it his his experiences which have inspired his new stand-up show, Postcards from the Z List.

"There is no particular message to the show," said Paul. "It's a series of funny anecdotes about how my life changed in January 2011 when I first became aware there was a job opportunity on a certain ITV quiz show and it's the reality of what life is like on the Z list which I find an intensely entertaining place to occupy. It's been very entertaining ride thus far."

The added exposure - The Chase is the most watched daytime TV programme with millions tuning in - has had an effect on Paul's stand-up career.

"It has rather changed the nature of my audience," he said. "There are a lot more people who are a bit surprised by how sharp and occasionally blue I am. I don't really want to tone it down as I consider myself as a Chaser and a comedian and I don't want either to compromise the other.

"I'm somebody who does two jobs full time no. I am a professional quizzer and I am a professional stand-up comedian and it's never particularly easy juggling the two jobs. We stop recording The Chase in July apart from the occasional celebrity shows and I have time to recharge my comedy batteries.

"The two jobs are also interconnected. Being a tea time personality means that I sell more tickets and more people know who I am and I can only be grateful for that."

People who may only know Paul through The Chase may be surprised at his comedy credentials which include being voted best club comedian at the prestigious Chortle Awards in 2014.

"I must stress I have been a stand-up comedian for 20 years now and I performed an awful lot of stand-up before I'd even heard of the Chase or Chase even heard of me and people who come to the shows should just be aware of that."

As a professional quizzer, Paul's role on The Chase is the tip of the iceberg. Earlier this year he came 14th in the world quizzing championships out of 2,300 contestants.

"It's basically like sitting an exam with people all over the world," said Paul. "If someone had given me 14th at the beginning I would have bitten their hand off but being a perfectionist you know you could have finished higher if you'd not made a silly mistake here or there."
