KNUZDEN pub landlord Derek Slater has launched live entertainment and new cask ale pumps after an extensive refurbishment.

Admiral Taverns have funded the work at The Cabin End in Windsor Road, with more than £60,000 spent on upgrading the pub’s appearance outside and in, as well as crucial maintenance such as replacing the boiler and installing new beer lines.

And postman Derek, who took over the pub almost three years ago when his brother and the pub’s previous landlord David died, said the business was thriving.

Derek, who opens the pub at 4pm after finishing his round for the Royal Mail, said: “I think this is the first refurb the pub has had since it was built.

“Admiral have done quite a bit to be honest and a lot of it is things the customer won’t see.

“I had been pushing for this since I came in as I wanted the outside doing up.

“The kerbside appeal is very important as, if the pub looks nice, there is more chance of people coming in.

“I said if they could do it up outside I would start doing some jobs on the inside and it looks a lot better now.”

Derek has now increased the pub’s cask ale offering from one pump to three and launched live entertainment on a Sunday.

He said: “The cask ale has gone down really well so if that carries on I might look at going up to three pumps.

“We are also looking at the possibility of doing some food in the future.

“On the entertainment front we have started off with Sunday afternoons and that has been a great success.

“We had never had live entertainment on before and it has gone really well so I might look at starting something on a Friday as well.”

Derek added: “We are getting a lot more people coming in now.

and we have got people coming in for the cask ales and for the entertainment as well.

“Some of these are people who used to come in but we have never seen them before so they are coming back to us.“Hopefully with these new changes we will get a few more coming in to join us.”
