Errazuriz Estate Carmenere 2011, £8.99, Majestic, Wine Rack and independents.
Carmenere is another native grape, this time one that Chile has made its own. The flavours are of chocolate and plums with black pepper, oak and rich tannins.
This is a classy red, with 13.5 per cent alcohol and at a price which makes it better value than many European options.
