BRIERFIELD used to be known for its pubs. Back in the day you would need some serious stamina to make it through the town on a Friday night crawl before then heading off to the bright lights and nightclubs of Burnley or Nelson.

It is fair to say that is no longer the case.

Drinking in Brierfield is a distant memory — but now the town is becoming something of a mecca for takeaways.

A belting Chinese, a corking Indian and a couple of passable kebab shops adorn the streets where the drinkers used to stagger. And there is also the Poppadom City.

OK, it might sound more like a Guns ‘n’ Roses song rather than a food outlet — well it does to me, although one of my colleagues once described me as weird — but I thought I would give it a go the other night.

I found myself humming along to the earworm of Axl Rose as I went in to order a mixed donner kebab on a naan bread and after a 10 minute wait managed to head off — still with Axl on my mind — to get stuck in.

The kebab contained all the usual bits and pieces of meat and that and the naan was decent enough, even though there was a little too much salad for my liking. But that’s what litter bins are for.

Despite the odd name, Poppadom City is now on the radar.
