I’VE just spent two weeks in bonny Scotland - and I really wanted to bring you, the reader, an insight into some of the finest fast food available north of the Border.

Heck, I have even been followed on Twitter by a Glasgow kebab shop...and it doesn’t get higher than that.

But I suffered a setback when heading back into Telegraph Towers. “You are not doing a Scottish review, this is Lancashire not Lanarkshire,” growled our king of the features department.

“Besides, who wants to read about you eating a deep fried meat pie?”

So that was one idea out of the window then.

Not to worry, I am versatile and while watching England’s footballers running around like extras from a Men Without Hats video as they beat Poland the other night I decided to give Follies a call.

The Nelson institution rarely disappoints and 30 minutes after placing my order a large mixed kebab and fries arrived.

Kebabs are never a risk from Follies. They are always crammed with a choice of meats and salad - and it was as good as ever.

Even the fries - never normally a strong point at takeaways - were good and tasted just like ‘proper’ chips.

Always worth a visit when passing, Follies retains its place at the top of the Nelson takeaway tree.

* The deep fried meat pie was astonishingly good by the way.
