CONFESSION time. I am not normally the biggest fan of pizza.

That pizza base can too often have a taste of cardboard packing and in the past I have tasted cheese that was cheese in name only.

But there are good reports from Nelson’s Santa's. It has survived the test of time — and that is no mean feat in an over-subscribed market.

So, with menu in hand, I decided to give a pizza a chance.

A Desi Special seemed the only way to go, more for curiosity than any other reason.

I wasn’t going to be too adventurous and attack a 12-inch stuffed crust so ordered a nine-inch without a stuffed crust.

The doorbell rang pretty much bang on the 25 minutes they said when I ordered and a big box was handed over in exchange for £5.20.

The box actually contained what it said and the Desi Special immediately looked good.

The pizza base, that didn’t taste like its packaging, was covered with filling of tandoori chicken, chicken tikka, pretty hot pepperoni and spicy green chillies. There was also red onions and sweetcorn and the melted cheese held it together nicely.

It was good and while pizza will never form my core diet I can see why some people love it — and they can do worse than calling Santas.
