Deciding where to order from that oh-so-common pile of menus in the kitchen draw, we were drawn to the £15 set meal from Great Wall.

Unlike many a set meal where you need to switch a dish or two, this was pretty much what we would pick by choice.

We were warned delivery could take an hour, which was fine. What did annoy me was calling an hour and a quarter later to be told it was ‘being cooked’ and would be another 15 to 20 minutes – so we were looking at a 90-plus minute wait.

While the member of staff was polite and apologetic over the delay, explaining there was only one driver, I do expect a certain amount of grovelling in this kind of instance; an offer of a reduced price meal, an extra dish or perhaps a bottle of pop by way of recompense for the inconvenience.

Nothing was forthcoming.

Eventually, we tucked into a mixed starter of prawn toast, barbecued spare ribs, minced pork spring rolls and crispy seaweed with sweet and sour dip – all very tasty, although the ribs were a little dry on the edges.

Hong Kong-style sweet and sour chicken and beef with green pepper in black bean sauce were generous mains, with tender meat and large chunks of vegetables retaining their bite, while fresh chilli added heat to the beef dish.

The yung chow fried rice I felt was a bit much, almost a meal in itself; a simple egg fried rice would have sufficed.
