I spotted Perfect Plaice some time ago when it had a facelift, but there’s a chippy nearer home so we’d never been in.

But a friendly owner made the change of habit worthwhile.

He soon got chatting, and realising we weren’t regulars – but lived near by – he made it his business to convert us, saying: “It’s all about the food; people will travel past chip shops to come to a good one.”

Which is what we’ll probably do from now.

There was a wait for the freshly-fried cod (from a selection of cod, haddock or plaice) in a crisp light batter, which smelt really good as we unwrapped it.

My ‘jumbo’ sausage, chips and peas, was two regular sausages – the jumbo here’s a monster – in a really thin, crisp and dry batter coating. Perfect.

The peas were ‘not from a tin, they’re soaked overnight like your mum used to make’, and while tasting good they were perhaps a little too liquid for me.

We even got a second pot thrown in for free, to ‘make you come back’.

Our chips were light, golden and not at all greasy, although I prefer them a touch crisper.

This chippy owner’s philosophy is spot on, and he’s well on the way to making his shop the perfect place.

Our supper came to £6.75.
