AS regular readers of this weekly waffle will be well aware I am more than partial to food that is not a kebab.

Yes, I do enjoy a mixed grill doner as much as the next man, if not more so. But there are other things in life than one of those curious feasts from your local high street.

And in the cricket season I take delight in sampling some of the fineries from around the tea rooms.

A couple of weeks ago I dined at Todmorden and last Saturday I was at another venue where it is just wrong not to eat, the magnificent Enfield CC tea room.

For years Enfield has had a real reputation for fine teas and now there is a new tea room after a fire gutted the old one I am happy to report that reputation is only enhanced.

The sun shone down and I wandered around to the tea room — or my natural habitat, as one wag put it — and instead of the usual fare of pie and peas (it was too hot for that) I opted for a ham sandwich.

Freshly made and with a cup of tea, you could tell that the fine ladies of the tea room had made a real effort and took a pride in what they were serving.

As always, there was a selection of ‘afters’, including fruit pies and cream cakes, but the sandwich and a cup of tea did for me — and it was a treat.
