BLACKBURN’S Darwen Street is a neon-lit mecca of the takeaway.

Pizza, curry, kebab, fish and chips . . . you name it, you can get it with varying degrees of taste and quality.

But as a seasoned supper-time visitor to the street you would think I would have just about ticked every box — but no.

Somehow I had always missed Oasis. The big blue shop with double windows had slipped through my net — so I decided it was time to give it a try.

Certainly the Oasis has a different tack to most of the other establishments and seems to be trying to model itself on an American burger chain, as illustrated by the ‘are you eating in or taking away’ line thrown at me by one of the four staff behind the counter when I ordered a mix shish kebab.

They didn’t ask if I wanted fries with that, which was a shame because for £5.50 the large kebab was not quite as substantial as the price tag would suggest and certainly nowhere near in the same size league as some of the opposition.

The kebab was all right, the naan bread was fine and the shish and doner meat contained less of the gooey greasy mess you can sometimes get, while the salad was also fresh.

But somehow I felt a little let down. It wasn’t as good as it could have been. That’s a shame for a shop that should be a gem.
