BUYING something for a pound is some people’s idea of fun. I mean just look at the number of pound (or even 99p) shops that have sprung up around East Lancashire over the years.

Most of them are pretty much packed to the rafters pretty much most of the time.

There is even talk of a £1 pub making an appearance, so it is only natural progression to see a food shop going down the same route.

The Pound Bakery first appeared a couple of years ago and it does what it says on the tin — it sells bakery items for a pound.

In the name of research I nipped in to Blackburn Mall the other lunchtime and in a bid to avoid the crowds of schoolchildren who were not in school — does that make then just plain old children then? — decided to have a change of luncheon venue.

That venue was the Pound Bakery so I went for a couple of decent-sized sausage rolls and exchanged a nice bright pound coin for them.

While they were not the sausage roll of choice for a connoisseur, they were OK for a pound, even if they were a tad too flaky for comfortable eating on the move.

I’m just waiting to try the pound pub now . . .
