OH for the good old days in Nelson, the days when you used to roll out of the El Tropicano, Blueberries or Roxy and head across to kebab heaven on Railway Street.

The ‘Trop’, Blueberries and the Roxy are all long gone — and the old kebab shop is now a travel agent.

But on the corner of Railway Street and Broadway, on the site of a long-departed bookie’s, is Captain Cook's.

It sounds as though it should be a fish and chip shop in Whitby — in reality it is a takeaway serving the staples of burgers, pizza, curries and, of course, kebabs, right in the heart of the town centre.

Now I confess I like a kebab as much as the next man and decided to plump for a special described simply as The Beast Kebab, a mix of chicken, donner meat, chips, cheese, salad and sauce (well, mayo if you don’t mind).

The salad didn't appear that appetising so was quickly discarded but I am happy to report that the meat feast was right up to scratch and the cheese went well with the kebab meat.

The naan was stuffed to bursting and took some getting through — but I managed that task and went home happy after spending just £5.

Nelson may not have the nightclubs — and shops seem to disappear on a weekly basis — but the kebab business is in rude health.
