Address: Tasty Bits, 524 Bolton Road, Darwen

I HAVE stopped off at Tasty Bits takeaway and cafe for an early morning breakfast fix in the past — but this time I called in to buy lunch for that day.

The menu offers a variety of hot and cold foods, including crumpets from 50p, and if you’re a bit more peckish, there’s burgers from just £1.90.

I ordered a ham salad sandwich that was served on an exceptionally large teacake with freshly-carved ham and lots of salad.

The portion was generous, with tomatoes, red, green and yellow peppers, onion, lettuce and cucumber.

At £1.90 it was well worth the money and could have easily been shared between two people.

For my lunching companion Tasty Bits wasn’t such a success. Her tuna salad box, at £2.40, was less than appetising. With a stingy portion of rather strong tasting tuna, and some less than fresh cucumber, sadly most of it was thrown in the bin.

Although it was still early, the cafe looked inviting when I visited and the counter was clean. With hot and cold drinks being served too, it’s a perfect excuse to go back and eat inside.

A coconut and jam slice was added to my order for just 80p extra, so you can’t argue with the value, but they may need to work on their salads.
