NELSON has long been well served with takeaways, many of which last the course and stand the test of time.

Others come and go and are invariably replaced, but probably the finest in the town is one of the least celebrated.

Two years ago this column awarded the Kismat the Michelin Star equivalent of the East Lancashire takeaway scene, the inaugural Golden Kebab prize, an honour that offers no actual prize other than goodwill and kudos - but a prize that any takeaway worth its salt should be fighting for.

So the other night I thought I would pay Kismat another visit to see if their standards were still as high as they were when they were crowned as the big winners.

I thought I would order one of their supreme Peshwari Chapal Kebabs, a glorious mix of mince, chilli. garlic and assorted spices, in a gigantic and tasty naan.

And within seconds I realised it was just as good as it was before.

If anything it was slightly spicier than I remembered and the salad was actually a relief to take away some of the edge.

But it was a fine dish, a real treat - and if it was the time to vote for the Golden Kebabs, I know where my tick would be going.
