AS I have written about on numerous occasions in this column over the years the town of Nelson cannot be accused of being short on the takeaway front.

Whenever a shop becomes empty it seems as though it will only be a matter of time before it gets a new look and starts selling pizza, kebab or that odd fried chicken that bears little resemblance to the stuff you get from a famous American brand with a picture of a hat-wearing Colonel emblazoned across its advertising.

To be fair it can be a risky business taking on some of the new takeaways but fortunately there are enough good ones in the town meaning you don’t have to play that always interesting game of kebab bingo.

The other night I opted for one of the staples, the long-established Khan’s on the corner of Railway Street near to the town’s transport interchange.

An extra large mixed kebab in a naan was just in order and it did not disappoint. Plenty of kebab meat, chicken and other treats packed the fresh naan plus a rather large amount of salad (the healthy option don’t you know) and with a generous lashing of sizzling hot chilli sauce and a dash of mayo, it was a fine treat.

I also ordered a portion of fries and while they were of the thin variety, they were passable too.

It proves that the old ones can be the best.
