I AM still reeling from the shock of seeing salad mentioned in this column the other week.

I have tried and tried over the past few years to bring you, my loyal reader, some of the best and worst kebabs – only to see all that hard work ruined by a colleague who wanted to review a dish more suitable to rabbits.

Seemingly and mystifyingly, though, the green leaves were quite popular and now some people have suggested that this weekly missive shouldn’t be limited to a diet of doner.

Now I am not quite ready to go down the health food option. But aware of public opinion, I decided to steer away from my usual choice when heading through Burnley the other night.

I went past some belting – and some frankly shocking – kebab shops until I arrived at a Chinese chip shop called The New Hong Kong.

But what can you have in a place where kebabs aren’t on the menu?

Simply, steak pie, chips and peas – a proper supper after a day soaking up the sun at the cricket. And you know, I think I have found the ideal alternative to a large mixed doner.

The chips were outstanding, freshly cooked and crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside, the peas were also the sort you get at home – and anyone who can find a problem with a pie is probably from down south.

It was a belting meal from what was quite a busy shop – and next time I don’t fancy a doner, I will be heading back to the New Hong Kong.
