THIS week’s takeaway review is for those readers seeking an alternative to regular columnist Matt Donlan’s tour of East Lancashire kebab shops.

Contrary to his view that salad is evil and that you shouldn’t eat anything green, it is possible to have the words ‘healthy eating’ and ‘takeaway’ in the same sentence.

A town centre supermarket may seem an unlikely destination for the start of your takeaway detox programme but a hidden treasure lies at the rear of the store in the shape of its help yourself salad bar.

Many salad bars feature some limp lettuce and the cheapest bits of salad but not Morrison’s. There are all sorts of exotic combinations to go alongside your traditional salady stuff such as cucumber, tomato and peppers.

And – this is my favourite bit – every choice has the number of calories per scoopful clearly displayed. It’s also a salad bar for those who don’t like salad – even Matt – with pasta, noodles and pulse offerings along with hard boiled eggs and selected toppings. There is also a fruit selection too.

Three sizes of help yourself containers are available – a medium will set you back just £2 and there are no restrictions on what you can choose.

The only drawback is that some customers are guilty of sloppy spoon work so you can find beetroot in your couscous.
