Lancashire Telegraph review by Anna Mansell from December 4, 2010.

IT can be a worry when popular places undergo a revamp.

But I’d missed the news of the Bull’s Head changes, which include tasteful, modern decor, a new head chef and new front-of-house manager.

Stopping in for lunch, based on the venue’s former reputation, I was surprised by the new look but I liked it a lot.

And I liked the new menu even more: A selection of grills and pub favourites on the specials mirror, a choice of ciabatta sandwiches, and the chef’s ‘small plates’.

These were 17 tempting options, some sounding like rather grand starters, others like pared-down portions of more hearty fare.

The best thing was the price, at £6 each or £20 for four and a range of side dishes for £2 if you want a more substantial meal.

Among the treats on offer were beer battered fish goujons with minted peas, roasted squash or salmon risottos, Welsh rarebit, macaroni ‘three cheese’, and chicken and bacon salad.

On a bitterly cold day, me and my dad went for Lancashire hotpot and sage and onion Yorkshire pudding with black pudding stew.

The meat elements were delicious and unctuous in their respective gravies, and the braised cabbage with my hotpot had a lovely spiced tang.

Both dishes were substantial and rich enough to make a good lunch. If three were dining of an evening, I’d be well-tempted by the four-dish deal.

Our side order of buttered seasonal veg came steamed and crisp, without butter — but that suited me, being on a diet.

For £17.35 with a couple of soft drinks we left full and happy.

This was my first visit to the Bull’s Head, but I’m already planning lunch with the girls before Christmas.

Let’s get the train and take advantage of the new cocktail list!
