Lancashire Telegraph review by Catherine Pye from May 23, 2009.

AS someone whose only experience of Chinese food comes out of sweaty takeaway bags or from supermarket shelves, I was really looking forward to tasting something a little more authentic.

I’d heard great things about the Yu and You — they do outside catering for millionaires’ parties and you've got to make sure you book to get a table — but somehow, after spending £60 between us, my friend and I walked out feeling let-down.

There’s no denying that the building is impressive. It’s almost like you're entering a swanky club, with shiny surfaces, black and white decor and minimalistic art. In fact, we started to think we were a little underdressed but, as we were the only people in the restaurant, it was hard to judge.

We went at 7pm and were the only people in there until another party arrived at 8.30pm. The staff were the most courteous I have ever come across. But I was a little bit disappointed by the food.

I had sesame prawn toast as a starter, which arrived beautifully presented in eight little triangles They were lovely, but no better or worse than anything I’d had from a takeaway or supermarket and, for a starter, there was too much for one person. A small portion of chilli sauce arrived about five minutes later and it was a welcome addition.

For main course I chose was Stir Fried Chicken XO and egg fried rice. For the price — £9.95 for the chicken and £3.50 for the rice — I was disappointed.

The rice, served in a miniature bowl, was bland and the chicken had a strangely slimy texture that put me off. In fact, I left it.

It was complemented with a few mushrooms and carrots, but the overwhelming flavour was of watery celery.

The dessert menu was more westernised than I expected and more adventurous. I settled on apple fritters with honeycomb ice cream and syrup. My friend had the unusual strawberry-filled samosas with ice cream.

They were delicious, although the batter on my fritters could have been crispier and the honeycomb was little more than brown blobs in the ice cream.

Overall, I think it was a case of style over substance.
