Review: Little Hong Kong, Chorley
Situated on the first floor of the Dressers Arms pub, Wheelton, Little Hong Kong was formerly known as Wan’s Cantonese.
Before its reopening in May, the premises underwent a major refurbishment and the result is very pleasing.
The lighting is subtle and the tables are tastefully set with spotless black and white table linen and the staff immediately put us at ease with a friendly welcome.
We opted for the LHK Hungry Dragon Banquet which, at £16.50 per head, represents outstanding value for a four-course meal.
Unlike some Chinese restaurants this option also leaves room for plenty of choice within the banquet framework.
For instance there are a choice of four soups: hot and sour, chicken and sweetcorn, wan tun or vegetable hot and sour.
The hot and sour soup was a vibrant example, with chicken and whole prawns present within a deeply savoury broth.
The dragon banquet platter is ideal for sharing, with small samples of spare ribs, salt and pepper chicken wings, spring rolls, prawn toast, seaweed, vegetable samosas and crispy wan tons.
We selected main courses of beef on sizzling platter with Cantonese sauce and vermicelli noodles Singapore style.
The beef was very tender, complemented by a thick, slightly sweet sauce with the noodle dish perfectly spiced with fresh chilli and herbs.
Unctuous egg fried rice is served with the mains.
The meal was rounded off with two scoops of perfectly sound vanilla ice cream.
We will certainly be returning to Little Hong Kong.
The food and overall experience were excellent without being expensive.

VERY DISAPPOINTED.
I believe that if I am going to go for a meal I want the best my money can buy me for the price.
For Indian food I go to Bukhara/east z East or double tree, Italian Verdies English The pines, other places I frequent include Amelie's Coppull Gibbon Bridge and the like.
Other than when in Manchester or London I have not found a quality Chinese-Cantonese within 20 minutes drive of my home
A quick run down as to the disappointment regarding my meal
Ginger & spring onion ribs no meat on the ribs & no flavour at all, they appeared to be boiled ribs with spring onions and ginger cooked together and put on the side of the dish.
Spring rolls as thick as your middle finger, so next to no filling in them at all.
My wife's main of crispy chilli beef was as good as any you get.
The main disappointment had to be the special I ordered beef green Thai curry, this curry was nothing more that green Thai curry paste and water boiled up with boiled onions boiled courgette slices and some slices of beef added that resembled the Donner kebab meat you see in take away. to describe it you would say it was a large bowl of watery stock with a spoon of Thai paste added.
To accompany our mains we had steamed rice OK, chips from the freezer (I hate a Restaurant that to lazy to serve fresh chips)
We also ordered a side dish of stir fried mixed vegetables but for some reason a additional main course of Steamed Seasonal Vegetable in Light Soy sauce appeared.
To drink we had a drought Becks beer each this was cold and lively in fact it was one of the nicest Becks I have had, may be they should open a pub.
A small note to take into account if you are not o fay with Oriental food there is no explanation as to what any of the dishes are, so you will have to start asking the staff what is this dish and what is that dish.
