Lancashire Telegraph review by Kimberley Hall from July 9, 2011.

“I think it's one of those places where the man pays...so I'll settle the bill and take it out the joint account when we get home if that's OK?” My boyfriend cheerfully piped up at the end of our meal.

Going into the Parkers Arms is like stepping back into another time with its olde world charm, but the food couldn't be further away from a soggy cheese butty and bag of pork scratchings.

We'd booked on the strength of the amazing value menu of the day; two courses for £12 or three for £15, but naturally as soon as we saw the a la carte menu, we let all sensible budgeting fly out of the window.

Not that the full menu is expensive. We started with home cured organic smoked salmon for me (£6.90) and peppered venison for Andrew (£7) which were both beautiful. The lemon jelly and beetroot jelly which accompanied my salmon with homemade bread and a small, fresh, dressed salad were spot on. The venison was also cooked to perfection, and melted in the mouth.

The chef here really knows what she's doing. In fact I was warned that my duck main course would be a little pink in the middle as it was wild duck and would be a travesty if overcooked, which I was more than happy with. It came with creamed potatoes, samphire, green cabbage, cooked cherries and a tasty jus. No fake cherry flavour here though, real cherries cooked down which were moist and mushy and just holding together – bliss!

Andrew went for game pasty with chunky chips, red cabbage and salad leaves. He loved the meaty flavour of the game, well seasoned with a little thyme.

While we were too full for dessert we ordered one anyway – award winning chocolate and peanut butter cheesecake. With a title like that it has to be good. It was better than that. A long, thin slab of rich, heavy chocolate, with a slither of smooth peanut butter on a chunky, crunchy base. It's a good job we were sharing it!

With coffee, a brandy, 2 pints of real ale and a coke, we left £66 lighter and probably a few pounds heavier – but we're still reminiscing about that meal!
