Lancashire Telegraph review by John Anson from April 9, 2011.

HAVING given Blackburn’s newest dining pub a couple of weeks to settle in we set off for The Oyster and Otter with high expectations.

The former Hordens has been transformed so dramatically that anyone who visited the former pub will have great difficulty in recognising it’s the same building.

Surrounding by smart wooden decking, the premises have been totally remodelled inside too with wooden flooring, simple plain wallls, fashionably mixed furniture and plenty of intimate alcoves and table settings — even though the main dining area is open plan. It’s a clever trick and it’s been accomplished with aplomb. Happily the fare on offer should immediately establish this newcomer as a favourite.

Fish dishes are a speciality of the house although there’s a also a decent selection of pub classics too.

After much deliberation I opted for the Malaysian seafood curry with coconut rice (£10.95) while the better half decided to tackle the salt and pepper tiger prawns with salsa dip (£14.50).

The curry was first rate, very similar to a Thai curry with the slightly sticky rice served in a separate bowl to the vibrant curry which was packed with fresh seafood and was a riot of flavours. A small dish of lime pickle just added to the overall appeal. The tiger prawns were real monsters, beauti-fully cooked and with an excellent accompanying dip.

We managed to find room for a pudding. I chose the golden syrup sponge and custard (£5) while the better half had a selection of ice creams with homemade shortbread biscuits (£4.50).

Both were again beautifully presented and top marks for supplying a generous helping of custard in its own jug, marvellous.

Clearly it’s early days in the life of The Oyster and Otter but the newcomer has got off to a flying start.
