Lancashire Telegraph review by Caroline Dutton from June 6, 2009.

Cathedral crypts house many a splendid monument to the great and the good.

If you are lucky they also have half-decent cafeterias. You could easily be enjoying your humble lunch in the presence of a bishop, general or poet of yesteryear.

Imagine, then, my surprise and delight when I found a lovely venue right in the heart of Blackburn serving tasty food and giving good value for money.

In pleasant surroundings with light classical and choral music cheerily playing, the Cafe in the Crypt is undergoing something of a renaissance. The menu is accommodating for those who seek a decent lunch and also offers much welcome variety, coping with contemporary tastes and those more traditional.

My co-diners were impressed with the freshness of their beef and onion sandwiches, salad and chips. Special mention must be made of the chips. They are chunky and like those good old-fashioned chips that many wax lyrical over. I opted for the steak and kidney pie with new potatoes and vegetables. In some pies there is a terrible lack of kidney. However, this one had chunks of the stuff, which was very welcome.

We left feeling well fed and well looked after and £19 was good value for lunch for three.
