DARWEN was left 'just a little bit' disappointed today when singer Gina G dramatically pulled out of the Christmas light switch-on ceremony.

The pop singer was due to perform her latest single 'Next 2 You' but a family emergency forced her to cancel at the last minute.

Hundreds of people braved the cold weather to watch the annual festive parade in the town centre.

Ex-Rovers skipper Colin Hendry was on hand to save the day, signing autographs and flicking the switch.

A statement on Gina G's Facebook page said: "Just wanted to let everyone know that Gina has had to cut her promo tour short and fly back to LA today due to matters getting worse with one of her children back home."

Coun Stephen Potter said: "We were told the day before that she had to dash back home because her daughter was ill.

"If she has a family problem then we understand."

Coun Potter added: "Colin was very well recieved, he's still a town favourite."

Gina G rose to fame in 1996 after entering the Eurovision Song Contest with her number one hit 'Ooh Aah...Just A Little Bit.'

Hopefully that will have saved a bit of money. Colin Hendry is a far better attraction anyway, why didn't LET report that he would be there?

Exactly sean_brfc. If they knew she wasn't coming the day before, why didn't they say anything. It still said gina g on website.

It didn't save any money as Gina G wasn't charging anything...

Who cares. Switching Christmas lights on is the biggest non-event of the year.

Colin Hendry was the best bit about it as the rest wasn't really impressive with the garden fireworks and the few christmas lights. Another year Darwen gets the short straw

The short straw. Blackburn and Burnley (bigger towns) got Peppa Pig and Fireman Sam!!

C'mon happy you bang the drum about how darwen is trying it's best and how fantastic darwen could be then come out with this!! exactly what do you want from your town? everyone's trying their best and you throw a spanner in the works like this!
Cheer up lad there is light at the end of the tunnel unless you like being a Victor Meldrew

As a Darwener I feel I can say that perhaps Gina G pulled out because she realised that it was Darwen and not Darwin that she was booked to appear at. I for one would sooner be down under turning on Christmas lights rather than turning on the meagre collection of 40 watt bulbs that is the "winter wonderland" of Darwen town centre.

I know. Sorry. I just think switching the lights on is no big deal anywhere, not just Darwen.
