A study reveals husbands are happier when their wives do not work and stay home.

The survey, conducted by the Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research goes on to say that marriages are more likely to split if the wife is the breadwinner.

Professor Roger Wilkins, the author of the report, told The Australian, "When you look at men’s relationship satisfaction, it’s at its highest when their wife is not in the workforce. Those traditional gender roles die hard.

"I guess all things being equal, men would prefer their wife at home and managing the household."

However, this study does not appear to resonate with Brits.

According to the Office for National Statistics, there are five million working mothers in the UK.

This statistic is reflected in the UK. Safiya Ugradar set up her own events company, Everlasting Moments after she got married, and continues to work having had two children.

Safiya said: “I work full time, and I have two children. My business has to function around the kids' timetable.

“I couldn’t consider working without the support of my husband. He has always encouraged me to work. He facilitates my long and unpredictable and sometimes unsociable hours and when I need him to, he helps me at work too.”

Prof Wilkins further commented that “there’s reasonable evidence that if the unemployment rate rises, particularly for men, it will have detrimental consequences for marital stability.”

However, social progress is more than apparent in the Asian community, with a distinct move away from the conventional 'for better or worse' marriage set up.

With marriages becoming more equal, an increasing number of women are able to work part-time or full-time, thus becoming an integral part of the workforce.

Haseena Hamid, who recently opened the second branch of her Dark Secrets hair and beauty salon, said: “My job can be quite demanding, from training staff to attending to clients. Flexibility is paramount in my line of work and it is hard work with a young family.

“My husband has always supported me from the beginning to follow my dreams. It is with that support that I have been able to expand the business. That balance between work life and my responsibilities at home wouldn’t be possible without this.”
