Forty youngsters from the Abu Hanifah Foundation Scout Group, in Blackburn, took part in a special Scout camp in the Lake District.

Set in 250 acres, close to the shore of Lake Windermere, the camp offered children the opportunity to experience a wide range of activities, including archery, raft building and bush-craft.

Among the Beavers camping there was Maisha Lorgat, who has been a member of the group since it started. The excited eight-year-old said: “I didn’t want to go back home.

“My best bit was pond-dipping, and I had a great time around the campfire eating sticky, roasted marshmallows.”

Camping for the first time was Zaid Desai, who said: “I really liked archery and I was the best at it.

“I didn’t miss my mum and dad and I had so much fun with my friends, especially at night in our lodge.”

Among the organisers of the Scout camp was Bilkis Bax, who is one of 13 adult leaders of the AHF Scout Group.

She said: “Appreciating, and familiarising yourself with, the outdoor world is at the heart of the Scout group, and campsites allow the Scouts to explore the natural world around them, while having a fun time.

“The children got to learn practical skills, like making a shelter and raft building at beautiful Lake Windermere, and I extend my sincere gratitude to all of the adult Scout leaders who give up their free time regularly just so children get this opportunity.

“I would also like to thank our sponsor KQF Foods, who provided the excellent food for the barbecue on the Saturday night.”

But, while more than 40 children enjoy the Scout group every week, there are many others waiting to join in the fun. Abid Saleh, the Group Scout Leader said: “We invited future potential leaders to the Scout camp and they got to do rifle shooting and crate stacking, but we still need more adult volunteers.

“We have a long list of children on the waiting list, but not enough leaders and we desperately want to grow our group, so more children can experience Scouts.

“I urge others who enjoy working with children, and would like to have fun and further develop their skills to please get in touch.
