A multi-cultural fundraising event in aid of Orphans and Refugees is to take place in Darwen as part of Refugee Week.

On Saturday, June 21, Darwen Aldridge Community Academy will be hosting a fundraiser event to raise money for Syrian Refugees and Orphans as part of World Refugee Week.

The ticketed event, called East meets West, will consist of stalls, a three-course meal and entertainment in the form of a fashion show; clothes will be showcased from local businesses; Mika Couture, Poshaak, and celebrity designer, Safaa Couture.

Students will be putting on singing and dancing performance pieces to break the evening up. In addition there will be mini stalls auctioning off items and offering services such as calligraphy art.

All proceeds will go to international charity Islamic Relief. Saarrah Moosa, a teacher at DACA and coordinator of the event, said: “We are looking forward to having a fabulous night of fun, fashion and fundraising for Islamic Relief at Darwen Academy that will raise awareness of the plight in Syria and also raise funds to sponsor an orphan.”

Ateeq Saliq, head of the North West region at Islamic Relief said: “We at Islamic Relief are thrilled that Darwen Aldridge Community Academy are taking forward this initiative to raise much needed vital funds for orphans and refugees.

We welcome DACA’s commitment to helping the poor and needy across the world regardless of faith, gender and country, something which we at Islamic Relief feel strongly about.

“We are extremely excited to be working with Saarrah and the team in making this event a success, and we encourage everyone to come along and support them.”

There will be a multi-cultural theme embedded throughout the evening, for example the types of food served and the clothes modelled. The intention is to raise awareness that despite living in a multi-cultural society, there is still plight in many Eastern countries.

Students from Darwen Aldridge Community Academy will be working with the ‘Action Factory’ to create a drama performance portraying a snapshot of life as a refugee. This exclusive performance will be showcased at the event and will culminate the evening.

The UK Government has also promised to double all donations!

East meets West takes place on Saturday 21st June 2014 with stalls open for browsing at 5.00pm and the main event starting at 6.15pm.

Tickets are on sale from Darwen Aldridge Community Academy at £16 each or call 07720 264224.
