THOUSANDS of passengers travelling through an international airport will come face to face with artwork depicting a piece of East Lancashire’s industrial heritage.

The piece, unveiled as part of a new exhibition at Manchester Airport’s Terminal 2, was created by youngsters who became inspired after visiting Helmshore Mills Textile Museum.

The Holcombe Road attraction is one of twelve North West venues portrayed.

The artwork was created by children from Manchester schools and community groups who may otherwise not have had the opportunity to visit a museum.

Tasked with promoting industrial heritage in the North West, groups visited 12 attractions before getting creative with community artist, Andy Leigh, back in the classroom.

The piece inspired by Helmshore Mills Textile Museum was created by members of The Addy Young People’s Centre, which helps children and young adults in Wythenshawe, and depicts the mills themselves.

Louise Jacobsson, museum manager at Helmshore Mills Textile Museum, said: “The project presented a great opportunity for the museum to be showcased to a huge number of tourists.

"It was wonderful to see the children getting so excited and involved in the tales of the Industrial Revolution.

“I think this finished piece really captures their enthusiasm and will be a terrific advert for the museum.

“They have created a true work of art.”

Andrew Harrison, managing director of Manchester Airport, said: “This project has generated some unique images that will brighten up the day of those travelling through the airport, while at the same time broad-ening the horizons of pupils and members.”

The exhibition will be displayed in Terminal 2 for around a year.
