BURNLEY'S famous coat of arms has been given a modern twist by two international artists.

Simon Grennan and Sperandio hope the revamp will be a roaring success after it went on display at Towneley Hall.

But the artwork which features two Victorian stuffed lion heads, a knight's helmet and the famous ‘De Lacy knot’ of the De Lacy family reproduced in local willow has left some visitors scratching their heads as it.

The second sculpture in a series of seven has been unveiled as part of a £10,000 art project aiming to promote civic pride in the town.

The project will be on display in the Burnley Room at Towneley Hall until March next year.

The first piece, ‘Hammerton Street Saturday Night’ is also on display.

Burnley Council’s executive member for leisure and culture Coun Jeff Sumner said the project is being funded by a £10,000 Arts Council Grant, with £1,000 from Burnley Council.

He said: “This unique take on our coat of arms is unlike anything I’ve ever seen.

"It is very exciting to have such innovative artists working in Burnley.

“We hope that these sculptures will create a talking point for people in and out of the town and that many people will come to Towneley to see what is being created there.”

The pieces have all been designed by artist team Simon Grennan and Christopher Sperandio.

Simon Grennan said: “The response so far has been surprise and humour as people recognise the elements when they come together.”
