DOZENS of events were held in the community to mark the centenary of the First World War.

To acknowledge the important milestone, the Your Call scheme offered small grants to community groups and organisations, so that our communities could come together and commemorate the occasion.

One such event marked the installation of a plaque at the community centre by the Wensley and French Road Friends.

The event, part-funded by Your Call, also saw a bagpiper from Blackburn play tunes and members of social group the Recycled Wrens gave a poetry recital.

Another group which received funding was the Friends of Blackburn Cemetery who are planning to produce a biographical history of the war dead in the cemetery over the next four years.

Residents are also leading on a project to place a new memorial in Corporation Park. Local stone mason Brent Stevenson is donating time and material to create a memorial listing the names of nearly 4,000 people from Blackburn who fell in the war.

On Remembrance Day, pupils from Witton Park Academy worked with neighbourhood officers to create the world’s largest poppy. The event was very successful
