THIS category is about finding the boy or girl whose actions have made them stand out from the crowd – for all the right reasons.

It might be in terms of academic prowess or how they handle themselves in difficult situations; their sporting or artistic abilities or how they have overcome obstacles in their lives.

There are so many ways in which our East Lancashire youngsters shine on a daily basis and we want to hear those positive stories.

In previous years our panel of judges has been particularly impressed by those pupils whose actions have helped or inspire others or who have been keen to get involved in school activities and the wider community.

Last year’s winner was the wonderful Owen Sharples.

When Owen’s dad died from cancer he decided he wanted to help other families going through a similar ordeal so he started to raise money for Rosemere Burnley Chemotherapy Unit by carrying out a range of fundraising activities, which his teachers at Whittlefield Primary in Burnley said was an inspiration to all.

This year’s winner may have made an outstanding contribution in other ways, it might be a child who has striven hard despite illness or disability to really immerse themselves in their school or a pupil whose artistic skills are second to none.

Academic ability is always impressive but sometimes it’s those pupils who really work hard and do their best who deserve the recognition rather than pupils who have an innate ability. It’s those tricky decisions which our prestigious panel of judges will have to make with the winner announced at an awards evening later in the year.

This category is again sponsored by First Class Learning, an after-school tuition centre in Blackburn.

Nominations can come from teachers, governors, parents, other pupils (with parental approval).
