Your guide to Mellor Brook

The village of Mellor Brook is approximately 4 miles north of Blackburn.
The geographical area of Mellor Brook is quite small, covering an area of approximately 4 square miles. Despite its size, it still offers residents a selection of amenities.
Sanderson's Bakery is located in the heart of Mellor Brook, this well known local bakery has its roots in the village, eventually moving its main operation to Ramsgreave but still retaining its original village shop.
This provides excellent cakes, pies and sandwiches to a wide range of customers. Lunchtime often finds people queuing out of the door, such is its popularity. The Post office is adjacent to the Bakery and has been run by the same family for more years than they will own up to!
Between the two premises you find Britannia Gallery a family run business. This has recently expanded and now includes photography, framing and picture sales, mainly from local artists.
These 3 businesses are very close and every Christmas they have a joint party known as "the roundabout do". If you need to know anything that might be happening locally, between them they generally know.
The Feildens Arms is also located on the roundabout, in recent years it has undergone many changes from a vibrant local pub to a Lancashire Life newcomer of the year award and somewhere along the way it has lost some of its real identity.
It has recently been taken over, and the new owner is hoping to provide a balance between the two extremes along with good beer, wine and food.
In 1808/9 the road (A59) from Mellor Brook to Clitheroe was opened as a toll road hence the position of the toll house at the top of Higher Commons Lane.
Preston New Road (A666) between Blackburn and Preston, followed in 1824 and hence Branch Road, getting its name because it joined the two turnpike roads, opened at the same time.
The village also has a thriving community centre; it is thought the building came into existence in June of 1823 when a plot of land was assigned to a group of gentlemen on which they could build an independent place of worship.
The building was purchased by the Church of England in 1833 and it was proposed that it be used during the week as a schoolhouse. The premises became known as St Saviours Chapel, Mellor Brook.
The building was used as a primary school right up until 1962 after which time the Church allowed it to be sold to the Parish councils of the area.
In 1966 Mellor Brook Community Centre came into existence and has been such ever since.
The Community Centre now hosts a variety of activities including toddler groups, dance classes, bingo and whist drives.
They also regularly hold musical events organised by Shamrock Promotions, a locally owned company.
