Your guide to Mellor
TWO-and-a-half miles north west of Blackburn is the village of Mellor.
The name Mellor' is derived from the Celtic translation of bare hill' and a visit to the area reveals how fitting this description is.
Situated on Mellor Moor overlooking the Ribble Valley, Mellor is within the county's green belt boarders.
The moor was also the site of a Roman encampment and on a clear day there are views of Blackpool Tower and further to the Irish Sea.
Because of this, it benefits from a small amount of tourism which is focused on local history, the countryside and outdoor activities.
Access to the village is great; the A59 passes close to the village as does the A617 dual carriageway and both these roads connect to major motorways, the M6 and the M65 respectively.
The 2001 Census recorded a population of a little over two thousand, but when the ward of Mellor is considered, which encompasses Balderstone and Osbaldeston, that number rises to just over three thousand.
Because of the rural location, there is a strong agricultural community on the outskirts of Mellor village.
This may be why a traditional yet modern atmosphere pervades the surroundings.
The people of the area seem to take great pride in their community and the tidy cottages and manicured gardens reflect that.
Outside of the village itself although still within the Mellor area, is Stanley House, which dates back to the 17th Century but now is an elegant country house hotel and restaurant.
It has become a popular choice of venue for hosting weddings and it's not hard to see why.
Over recent years there has been extensive restoration and enhancement to both the buildings and the landscapes, yet it has managed to retain its historical charm and character.
