The issues over standards at the BBC

I’VE never quite known what to make of the telephone numbers which are paid to footballers in weekly wages.

But there is a very open market. Some footballers are extraordinarily talented. Other clubs compete for their skills.

The market finds a price. The environment is a harsh one.

If the performance is not there, the club suffers, and the player’s market value drops.

But there’s not such an active, open market for the talents of television presenters.

We have to rely on the judgement on our behalf of those who write the cheques.

How a price is settled is quite beyond my comprehension.

But what I do recall is my own incomprehension that a person called Jonathan Ross was given a contract worth £1 million to present a series of light entertainment programmes.

Taste in television programmes varies. But have I been alone in being underwhelmed by this man’s skills?

At least in the future I may be spared even this; for the question which now must arise is whether Mr Ross, and his colleague, “presenter” Russell Brand, should be paid a penny by the rest of us.

When I first read about Mr Ross and Mr Brand’s behaviour on a Radio 2 programme I thought perhaps that the newspapers had exaggerated what had happened.

But in many ways it’s worse than I imagined.

It would not have been funny were it a thoughtless prank by some teenagers. But Ross and Brand are not teenagers.

They are grown-ups, who in return for much more money than most people earn in a lifetime are required to conform to BBC standards.

And this was not thoughtless – but carefully thought through.

The item was pre-recorded. Brand and Ross evidently considered whether it should be broadcast.

So, one assumes, did their producer, and whoever they report to.

And they all then lost any sense of respect for Mr Sachs and the paying public, any sense of decency, and decided that the item would be broadcast.

Three big issues about arise here.

The first is the obvious one. The BBC has clear standards of decency.

This broadcast has to be in clear breach of them, if words have any meaning.

Second, there’s the way the BBC has dealt with the story. They have given it a good deal of coverage.

But when others not connected with the BBC are in the centre of a media fire storm like this, the BBC will be relentless in pursuit.

They’ll send news teams to homes, and all the rest.

I’ve not spotted this happening with the senior people from the BBC who ultimately are responsible for this appalling lapse in standards.

Finally, there’s this. If the presenters concerned had been working for a local radio station – BBC Radio Lancashire, for example – and they’d done this, does anyone seriously believe that they’d still be in post?

Of course not. They’d have been given their P45 before you could say “Jack Robinson”.

And it’s difficult not to feel that that’s exactly what should happen to these two so-called “stars”.

Russell Brand has now resigned, and quite right too. But is this the end of the story?

The BBC knew what they were getting when they signed up Ross and Brand. The grand daughter of Mr Sachs can be found posing as Volupta on www.satanicsluts.com
. At worst the incident was in bad taste-a welcome diversion for Jack and co as we head towards recession!

It's totally irrelevant that Mr Sachs' grandaughter posed as Volupta. I defy anyone who has a grandaughter not to be upset if some clown goes around claiming in public to have sh****d her.

Absolutely correct in that it is completely irrelevant which site she has been posted on. More alarmingly is that this episode shows to what low standards as a nation we have fallen. 30000 complaints, but a drop on the ocean really. Ross should be sacked, not suspended. Obviously IF he had a shred of decency, he would have resigned too

I think this has been blown out of all proportion. The girl is a satanic ****, and something this small has offended her. I, as well as many others thought it was funny!!!!

I deplore the behaviour of these two so-called entertainers but lets be honest it is nothing new. Jonathan Ross has been making money out of us by being foul-mouthed and childish for years and Russell Brand has built his reputation on humour based on not-so-subtle sexual innuendo. It is a sign of how low standards in this country has sunk but then again what do you expect when the biggest selling newspaper has a bare-chested woman on its inside cover, supposedly giving her opinion on news events. I would be more prepared to listen to Jack Straw's opinion if the government had actually done something about these standards, rather than kissed Rupert Murdoch's backside so he would be nice to them. He who is without sin Jack old chap!

No, Mr. Straw, you are not alone. These two are obnoxious characters and not worth listening to or viewed. Whilst we are at it what about Jimmy Carr? A most unfunny man. But I don't need to list any more because I cannot name a "good, clean comic" unless we count old faithful Ken Dodd. It says a lot though of present day society when the reason for this lewd verbiage is supposedly to appeal to "the younger generation" I am not advocating bringing back rehashes of Morecambe and Wise, Fawlty Towers etc but there must be some decent writers who do not need to introduce the "F..." word into practically every show. But every time it is uttered the studio audience erupts into gales of laughter. What a society we live in!!

You have not taken up my points. If the girl puts herself around then that is her business. My concern is about the foul language that we get on practically every programme - bring back Sutty and sweep!! Seriously, I watched a programme about John Prescott the other night and a warning was given about bad language. I expected it to come from John but the "Fs" came from an Earl that was "entertaining" him. Supposed to be a upper class family yet this guy was cursing away in the company of his lady guests. Pathetic.
Clean up the programmes or sack the Board!!
