IT’S a bit of a quiet one, the VW Touareg, but it’s really quite an impressive car.

The first thing to note is the engine. It’s a 3.0-litre V6 and it’s got lots of poke.

The version I drove was the lower-powered example, with 204ps, but it’s got plenty about it.

It gives you confidence behind the wheel and that knowledge that, if you need to tackle the rough stuff, there’s lots of torque there.

One can only imagine how good the 262ps version is.

Talking of going off-road, the Touareg really is ready to go on that score, too.

It can handle 45-degree slopes and wade through water that’s 580mm high and optional air suspension means you can raise its ride height.

That’s serious stuff and shows that VW means business as far as the off-roading goes.

But, let’s be honest, most Touaregs are unlikely to see much mud, so what we have here is also a very good car on the road.

Inside, it’s very comfortable indeed, especially with the full leather that was on my tester.

Being a VW, the quality of materials throughout is excellent and has a real feel of quality.

There are lots of gadgets and the touchscreen system is excellent, with everything in one place and very good navigation, which has added handy gizmos such as how far you are above sea level.

You also get safety features that include dynamic cruise control, lane assist and a post-collision braking system.

It’s got a lot going for it, the Touareg. It’s highly capable, incredibly well-built, practical, comfortable and good to drive.

Prices start from £40,215.
