How should I run in a diesel car?
Q I've finally been persuaded of the wisdom of buying a diesel car after many years of owning various petrol models. I'm scrupulous about running in a new car properly, as I tend to keep them for several years, but having never done so in a diesel before, how should I go about running it in properly?
AObviously the first point of call should be your owner's manual, which should provide you with information about running your car in properly.
Your local dealer of specialist service station should also be forthcoming with advice relating to your specific model. Being so used to petrol engines, you may find that you over-rev the engine at first without realising you are doing so.
As a general guide, try not to exceed 3,000rpm for the first 1,000 miles of your car's life and then 4,000rpm until the odometer reads 3,000 miles. You'll soon get used to operating at lower revs and will be pleasantly surprised with your improved fuel economy.
Once you have 5,000 miles or so on the clock, make a point of exceeding 4,500rpm at least a couple of times a week to help the fuel injectors with their self-cleaning.
