Does braking wear out car's transmission?
Q My aunt and uncle are eccentric, but they have one particular habit that really stands out. Once a week they drive me to the supermarket for groceries (I don't have my own car) and when we arrive, they look for a parking place they can drive into without reversing, which has another space directly in front of it so that they can drive out again without reversing. As a result we usually park miles away from the store entrance! If someone takes up the 'free space' in front of them they get very upset and mutter about how having to use the reverse gear wears out the car's transmission. Are they right? Dave
A They are not eccentric - they are bonkers.
Avoiding the use of reverse will do no good at all.
In fact, the only thing it could eventually lead to is reverse gear itself seizing up from under use.
Maybe their desire to avoid reverse at all costs suggests that they are actually not very confident about performing reverse parking manoeuvres and are just using this as an excuse.
Perhaps they might appreciate rear parking sensors as a birthday present, or you could persuade them to get something like a Nissan Primera (pictured), which comes with a reversing camera!
