| How should I run in a diesel car? | | 3:10pm Thursday 13th March 2008 | | Q I've finally been persuaded of the wisdom of buying a diesel car after many years of owning various petrol models. I'm scrupulous about running in a new car properly, as I tend to keep them for several years, but having never done so in a diesel before, how should I go about running it in properly? |
 | Does braking wear out car's transmission? | | 4:28pm Thu 6 Mar 08 | | Q My aunt and uncle are eccentric, but they have one particular habit that really stands out. Once a week they drive me to the supermarket for groceries (I don't have my own car) and when we arrive, they look for a parking place they can drive into without reversing, which has another space directly in front of it so that they can drive out again without reversing. As a result we usually park miles away from the store entrance! If someone takes up the 'free space' in front of them they get very upset and mutter about how having to use the reverse gear wears out the car’s transmission. Are they right? Dave

| Should I go to breaker's yard for parts for my banger? | | 4:24pm Thursday 6th March 2008 | | Q My car is the definitive old banger, but it’s given me great service and I want to keep it running as long as possible. I’ve even learned quite a lot about maintenance and repair from tinkering with it. These days it needs more and more new parts, and it’s started to get expensive, so I have been wondering about going to a breaker’s yard to source them. Would you recommend this? |
