LAST week's puzzle turned the spotlight on Darwen Street, where the early settlement of Blackburn developed.

The market, which took place round the cross at the junction of Church Street and the town's early industrialisation, led to this settlement extended down as far as the bridge and the creation of Jubilee Street, named to mark to silver jubilee of King George III in 1785.

During the early 1800s it was lined with retail and commercial businesses, such as grocer's and butcher's shops and had become known for its shoe and clog manufacturing.

Later in the century the Alma Buildings were built as two storey terraced properties to accommodate retail outlets.

Among the most distinctive buildings on Darwen Street is the Philanthropic Mutual Assurance Society, built in 1850 on the corner of St Peter Street and the former General Post Office, which opened in 1906.
