Blackburn town centre pub to be opened as an Irish pub

GREEN THEME The Jubilee being painted GREEN THEME The Jubilee being painted

A TOWN centre pub has been transformed and is set to reopen under a new name.

The Jubilee, in Blakey Moor, had a troubled history and was well known for being one of the town’s ‘rougher’ pubs.

In February last year, a man was arrested after having been seen dropping a gun on the dancefloor of the venue.

And in 2008 police closed the pub after a mass brawl involving 30 pre-Christmas revellers.

But the pub has been taken over by husband and wife team, Paul and Michelle Corrigan and has been turned into an Irish-themed bar that will also serve food, called Corrigan’s Irish Pub.

Mr Corrigan said: “It’s about getting away from The Jubilee and keeping away from its past as much as possible.

“That’s why we’ve gone for the Irish theme as it’s completely different.

“We’ve redecorated it completely, painted it green and given it a really good clean. It’s miles different from before with traditional homemade food and I really want to push our cask ales.”

Corrigan’s Irish Pub is due to open on Friday, and will open every day from 10am, until 11pm, Monday to Thursday and midnight Friday to Saturday. Food will be served until 9pm.

The change comes as two other Blackburn pubs have been re-let following interim management by Winterhill Leisure.

Also enjoying a new lease of life is the Aqueduct Inn in Bolton Road, which had been closed for a number of weeks, and the Lord Raglan in Kings Road, that had been on the brink of closure when Winterhill Leisure negotiated a support package with Daniel Thwaites earlier this year.

Winterhill Leisure, a Blackburn-based national interim pub management firm specialising in managing distressed pub businesses, negotiated new landlords to come in, with Thwaites brewery.

I hope it does well but I think Blackburn has had its day. I drank around that area Vulcan, Jubilee, Peel etc and they were good pubs. I dont remember lots of aggro though.

Margo saw to that, just flashed her assets and everyone behaved!!!
Brings back great memories of the Barbary Coast! had my first pint down the steps in the dirty duck when ken pilling was on the door!
However i still think there is room for another good quality pub that serves good food and thwaites cask beer in the town, simply because theres not much choice after the postal order?

Has brfcianbrfc says l also used to have a few drinks in that area and no problems Margo were running the Jubilee with John then, its the problem with law and order now the monkeys get away with murder, l worked in the Top Hat in them days and if any body got out of order it was out, usually down the stairs and we tried to make sure the did not miss a step, it made people think twice about casing trouble. good luck to the new venture l hope it works out for them. l will have a drink there in June when l am bark if its still open.

The Top Hat! fanastic memories, but just one thing!!! Jonny Knight the doorman!! You knew where you where with him!
I'm sure if this pub is mananged properly and students get a good meal in there at a reasonable cost, along, with drinkers that want to go somewhere else to try a cask beer wouldn't work.
Good luck because i'll be coming in for a pint.

God, the Dirty Duck, Vulcan and Jubilee bring back loads of memories! Do any of you remember the Clarence in the precinct and Coconut Grove (think it was the Regent 1st)? Bloodyhell, how time flies!

The Jubilee was the best pub in Blackburn town centre for years when Tom & Linda Fox ran it. If it wasn't for the intervention of some heavy handed plod a few years ago it would probably still be thriving as would Blackburn's nightlife. When they shut the Jubilee they more or less shut Blackburn.

The Jubilee was the best pub in Blackburn for over 20 years when run by Tom & Linda Fox.
Always full at lunchtime with the students and at weekend from opening to closing. Never any trouble until it got a bad name with the dibble who caused the worst trouble the pub ever saw when they stormed the pub on April 1st 2001.
Nobody ever brings that up when talking about a pub with a trobled past.
Ask the people of Blackburn for their Jubilee memories and it wont be of a troubled pub it will be of a pub that was packed at weekends and a pub that everybody used to be made welcome if you were a local or not.

Brought back some great memories, reading those posts. Sadly, Blackburn's great nightlife is long gone. The Jubilee, was Blackburn's best town centre pub, by far, when it was run properly by Tom and Linda. But the Old Bill ruined all that.

I run a pub in Blackburn myself, but thankfully it's not in the centre. I wouldn't touch one with a bargepole. The last time I ventured down there, it was full of riff-raff and dossers.
Having said that, I wish you well with this venture. Good luck.

Heard a whisper tonight that Thwaites have sold The Fernhirst?

I agree, Blackburn won't get back to being the great night out it was 10+ years ago. But I don't agree with your reasons. Previously all the utter scum were confined to Church Street, and the rest of us avoided it like the plague - everyone happy. As soon as the pond-life started migrating to the better areas, anyone with any sense decided to stay local, or head to somewhere decent like Preston, Whalley or Clitheroe. Can't see that changing with the opening of one pub, however decent it turns out to be.

Good intentions, but its on a loser. Unless you ar elooking to go into town to get smasshed and cause trouble.
Haven't been in town for any sort of night out for some 15 yrs +. Now when I go into town during the day and pass some pubs, especially Ribby, it is frankly embarrassing to see the types that frequent these places.
God knows what it is like at night!
You couldn't get me down there if you paid me.
Its 'society' in general on display where the very worst is on view.
It started deteriorating around about 30 yrs or so ago.
I have lost count of the times my son came home from having a drink and had been threatened and assaulted by 'low life, brain deads'.
It is sad to see him not be able to just get dressed up and go for a good night out with mates and girlfriends.
Thats 'progress' for you.

To all who have been positive about our new pub Corrigan’s opening we would like to sincerely thank you. We would like to reassure you all that we are wanting to help bring some life back in to Blackburn town centre by giving people somewhere nice to go where you can relax and enjoy yourself.
The pub is open 7 days a week with food being served from 10am till 9pm from a large menu with something for everyone giving good value for money with all of our main meals being under £5 and children meals at £1.99. We are serving all the Irish classics such as homemade Irish stew with homemade soda bread or if you fancy a burger or full breakfast we have it all at Corrigan’s Irish pub. We also have a large variety of lagers, sprits, traditional cask ale, coffees and or course Guinness. We are showing live football and horse racing and have two pool tables, games machines and sheltered smoking area in our beer garden.
All we can ask is that you will give us a try and hope you enjoy the pub as much as we do. We will keep you updated on fourth coming events such as Irish singers or if any local bands/singer would like to get in touch please feel free to come down and speak to myself or one of the team.
Thanks
Michelle Corrigan and all the team at Corrigan’s Irish pub
