Blackburn enjoying 'busier than Christmas' retail boom

BLACKBURN is enjoying a retail boom as thousands of extra shoppers flock to the town's £66million new shopping centre.

Footfall has leapt by more than a third since the Mall extension opened with traders telling jubilant council bosses it has been 'busier than Christmas'.

In the first week of opening from Monday July 26 the number of shoppers increased by 36 per cent compared to a normal week.

Since then the weekly figures have been up 16 per cent year-on-year.

Traders said customers were shunning the likes of Preston and Manchester, while Blackburn MP Jack Straw said the new development had 'given the whole town a lift.'

A Mall spokesman described the response as 'excellent'. It is hoped the success will now attract more big-names to fill the vacant stores.

The shopping centre has been packed since its opening brought the flagship Primark store to town, as well as a Costa Coffee, and larger Next, New Look and WHSmiths.

Costa Coffee said its takings had more than doubled bosses' estimates since it opened.

And in the next few months plenty more will be on offer with further stores moving into town including shoe shop Deichmann and clothing stores Peacocks, Bank and USC. A bigger JD Sports is also taking a unit.

Mr Straw said: “When I was in there someone commented to me that it felt like a city, and it certainly felt like a Christmas with the amount of people in there.

“It’s given the whole town a lift, and once Church Street is cleared it will be buzzing even more.”

Ryman Stationery, based in the old section of the shopping centre, has recorded a 10 per cent rise in takings since the extension was opened.

Deputy manager Mark Ellison said: “The Mall is now set up to give us more trade. It's working. When the rest is finished it will be even better."

And Costa Coffee manager Raphael Marlborough said: “Before we opened, our big bosses did an estimate of how much we would take - we doubled it.

“It’s been very, very busy. Things are settling down now, but the opening weeks were absolutely fantastic.”

Despite fears the new shopping centre would dominate shopping to the detriment of other areas, traders based in the rest of the town also said takings were up.

This brings to an end to the slump caused by the credit crunch and the building work in Church Street.

Alan Hargreaves, from carpet store Counsell and Woan, which recently moved to Darwen Street, said: "We have done really well throughout August and a lot of the traders here have said that there is a noticeable difference in town since the Mall extension opened.

"The last seven days in particular have been noticeably busy and it is great for a lot of the shops."

Fellow Darwen Street trader Rose Fowler, of Mercers Toys Limited, said shoppers were stopping off on the way to the new centre, providing a boost after a ‘rollercoaster’ year.

She said: "Business has definitely picked up since the precinct opened, especially with the new Primark which is very popular.”

The council’s Tory regeneration chief Alan Cottam said: “The feedback has been superb, and the comments have come back that there is no need to go to Manchester or Preston any more. I am delighted we are getting these good reports so soon.”

Well it's positive to hear that trade is booming again, this will be greatly improved when the new market opens along with new stores in the coming months, defiantly what this town needs, Blackburn has now got a bright future.

Lets hope that this Blackburn retail boom is taken into consideration in determining whether to allow the Preston Tithebarn development. It'll be great if there's good shopping in bothe Blackburn and Preston.

This development is definitely a big boost to the local economy.....the refurbishment and extension, together with the new tenants, has definitely improved the 'shopping experience'. I stopped going to Blackburn for my shopping needs some 10 years ago, after feeling that it didn't have much more to offer than Burnley ( A tacky shopping experience) but WOW! what a fabulous shopping centre the Blackburn mall now is! Been a few times since the refurbishment, and it sure has a 'city feel' about it......has been very busy each time i've gone...Undoubtedly, the development is having a 'ripple effect' for the rest of central Blackburn. Increased footfall, and expenditure.......ha
s proven that the right investment and regeneration DOES pay dividends.....

how depressive some people are; complain when Blackburn shopping is rubbish then complain when everything has been improved. Some are just never happy.

grow up.

You will always get a handful of negative critics on here and just because someone puts Blackburn after their name doesn't mean they actually live there. They could be from another town out to denigrate the good name of Blackburn. Once the market is up and running - and the old market is demolished - it should be onwards and upwards.

Or they're probably just some jealous non blackburners, because they don't get a clean & shiney shopping centre with stylish shops and market.

Ffthteen years on letters after letters i sent to LET regarding LORD SQUARE was dated ,i said in my letters if LORD SQUARE was modernised brought into 21st century people will flock back to Blackburn town centre in droves and no longer they will have to go to places like Preston,Bolton and Manchester. My dreams have come true,Blackburn now need a four or five star hotel in the town centre, the orbital road must soon be completed if Blackburn want to be granted a city status. But please stop that Titherbarn PROJECT IN PRESTON,that will have a detrimental affect on Blackburn,Burnley,Bl
ackpool and Bolton.Every town need a level playing feild in fair competition in attracting shoppers from their immediate catchment area. The Preston project will harm many towns economy its unfair and damaging to all the neighbouring towns like Blackburn. All the hardwork of Blackburn regenerations will be turned back to the days of shoppers desserted, and many shops closing down for good.Is that what Blackburn want ?

Seeing is believing. The fact of the matter is, that the new shopping mall in Blackburn, appears to have re-invented itself. It's Bright, big and airy, and inviting. There's no doubt in my mind, that when the markets section opens, it will further increase the footfall, and make it busier than ever. I know of friends and family, from Preston, Bolton as well as Burnley, who have recently visited the shopping mall, and commented positively on the new environment......i can't see the likes of Burnley EVER competing with the mall Blackburn........and that's from a Burnleyite.........

I'm pleased to hear the shopping centre doing is so well. Its about time The Mall was brought up to date.I'm sure more people will visit from other towns.I would like to see the nightlife in the town improve as I was shocked by the lack of people out and about on a Saturday evening.Maybe more weekend concerts at King Georges Hall would help?

The town has got a little of the old swing back but there is a long way to go before we are competing with other local towns, the mess that mad margo made is still a blight that i still think will come back to cost each of us when they realise that the only way the site is going to sell is by compulsive purchase order by the council and we are then all paying for Mrs Grimshaws mistakes.Margerete Grimshaw introduced herself on the sunday politics show this year as Blackburns unofficial representative it offends me that she can do this on national tv without asking the people first, and on a recent day time radio show on radio Lancashire she insisted that she never went topless behind the bar in her days of working the bars around town,if that is the case she is then calling all our forefathers liers as i have been told the stories off several old townies many different versions but all the same outcome. Why now be ashamed of what i view as a brave and radical thing to do in the sixties to make money and build up to the business woman she became and i still have not come accross anybody who has been granted planning permission without having sufficent funds to complete the works reguardless of changing property markets. When we have cleared up her mess we may be in a position to compete with other local towns for town centre footfall and much needed trade but we have a long way to go before then.

I first came to Blackburn when my hometown team played them in the old Div1, and I liked it.
Years later, as a steelfixer, on the Town Moor, where an on-site injury made me stay, and I did, because I still liked it.
Here I am, still here, because like anything else, you have to take the rough with the smooth.
I've watched this town lose it's heart and soul in recent years, yet have the true grit to carry on, regardless.
Pound-shops may live cheek by jowl here, as long as local employers pay peanuts for wages.
The Mall is a small twinkle of hope, in an otherwise endless gloom of Depression and if any shopkeeper has half a wit about them, they will cut their margins, to encourage that sparkle to become an inferno.

BwD bosses might also consider the concept of, free parking (or heavily discounted, on proof of purchase of certain amounts) on those 'slack days', to encourage the out of town shopper.

People whom comment upon the 'new look' Blackburn should either, put up or shut up, by making constructive rather than the derogatory remarks.

Margo Grimshaws' folly should be treated as a tourist attraction and not some point of personal ridicule.

Michelangelos' David has a little willy but it does not stop millions going to see it every year.

Michelangelo's david may have a small willy woolywords but that is a at least tourist attraction what is there for tourists to see at "The Mall" it's just ANOTHER shopping centre of which there is at least one in all biggish towns across the country. A lot of which are a heck of a lot bigger and with more shops than Blackburn's and if the local employers still continue to pay peanut's the local shoppers won't be spending much more money there than they already do.
