Business Link axes 194 jobs

A BUSINESS support group is to axe 194 staff in Lancashire after being hit by a funding blow.

Business Link Northwest is to lose over half of its 338 workforce because the North West Development Agency, which finances the organisation, has lost much of its budget.

A restructuring is now proposed to ‘deliver a streamlined Business Link service’.

Currently Business Link Northwest operates telephone and face-to-face advisers to support new businesses from its HQ in Preston but also has staff that work throughout the county.

Redundancies will be made across all departments. Details have not yet been released of staff affected.

Despite the cuts bosses said Business Link remains ‘open for business’.

Peter Watson, managing director, said: “We know there will be changes to the delivery of government business support and a White Paper will be released in the autumn setting out the coalition’s proposals in more detail.

“In the meantime Business Link will continue to offer support to North West companies, and those considering starting a business.

"We are very much open for business and have a wealth of expertise here waiting to help businesses get growing again.

“We will continue to work with growing businesses across the region, and, free and impartial advice is available for those looking to start their own business."

Formal consultation with staff has begun and redundancies are likely to take place before the end of March next year.

Hurrah, another tax payer backed quango gone. How could they justify 338 employees? What did they do? If they are that good then they will all be setting their own businesses up I suppose!

Sorry folks. Looks like your gravy train has ended.
We are currently recruiting packers and some call centre staff. Leave a message in the comments if you are interested.
(It is private sector though, so you will be expected to put in a full days work)

How much success did they create? Supposed to be a business support agency employing 338 staff, looks like it was just supporting itself. It would be good to see the cost of runing this against how much profit and employment was created by the businesses they are supposed to have supported in figures. Again, i expect we'd get spin, waffle and cloud cover. For a so called support agency offering advice and experience to emerging and established businesses, why has it taken cuts to make them "streamline" their organisation? This should have been continually ongoing and makes you wonder what advice was being given. As an acronym quasi "Q" (having a resemblance) "A" autonomous (does what it pleases) NGO (non government organisation) Jobs for the Boys this is one of many that lives up to its name!!!

I think it might be worthwhile actually finding out what they do and how many individuals and businesses they have helped before you start commenting and slating them - also, just because the employees are effectively public sector does not mean that they do not work 9-5 monday to friday like the rest of us, or work hard for their money. How many businesses, sole traders and potential new start ups do you think there are in the whole of the north west (lancashire, cumbria, greater manchester & merseyside) that are served by just 338 employees, put into perspective it's not actually a lot - it would help to be well informed before passing judgement!
