East Lancashire retail blow as chain closes five stores

FIVE East Lancashire Ethel Austin stores are set to close, it has been announced.

MCR, the administrators of the value clothing retailer, confirmed that a further 81 stores will cease to trade in the next three to four weeks.

This includes branches in Accrington, Blackburn, Darwen, Nelson and Rawtenstall.

Across Lancashire, stores in Chorley, Leyland, Preston, St Annes and Lancaster will also shut.

The move follows the closure of 124 stores last month.

Sad when the only big shop is Ethel Austin but that was the case. A 'main St' without any named shops. Food or charity shops - sad really.

Closing another shop I frequent. It has become really difficult to buy clothes for a shorty like me. Ethels was okay for that. At least I could guarantee something would fit from the youngsters section.

There's too many large ladies waddling around Accy for this chain to survive, and it doesnt help half of them are OAP's or on the rock n roll with 5 kids...now if it had been a pound-shop things would have been very different

Whilst I have to feel sorry for the people that work in the store. It has to be said a little foresight may have saved this business. Daddy regularly runs research on the stores renting his properties to see if their business is sustainable, suitable for the area etc. If the business ticks off all the boxes he raises the rent. Now out of interest, I looked into what they stocked could have changed to suit the demographic of the area and thus save their clothing retail chain. I was shocked to find that they did not retail one tracksuit! I don't think I need to say anymore.
