PEST control officers had to be called into a supermarket after a rat was spotted clambering on the shelves.
The rodent was pictured inside the Beehive Blackburn Service Station, in Haslingden Road, Shadsworth by a shopper, who was so disgusted he took to Facebook to report the matter.
He wrote said: "For anybody who shops at Sainsbury's at Beehive Blackburn Euro Garages be aware they have rats climbing all over fresh food in the shop we didn't stick around long but this rat was crawling all over everything please share this post and get it out there.”
His post was shared almost 2,000 times.
Bosses at Euro Garages, who own petrol filling stations across the country, said they carried out a full inspection after being made aware of the incident.
On Twitter Euro Garages apologised for the incident and said the rodent ‘appeared to have entered the site through when a door was left open’.
A Euro Garages spokesman said: "Thanks to everyone who brought the Beehive photos to our attention this morning.
“We immediately carried out a full inspection and invited a pest control agency to assess the entire site.
“They have given the site the all clear. It appears a single rodent entered the site when a door was temporarily open.
The company added: “The matter is now resolved and there are no ongoing issues.”
“We take our responsibilities towards public health and safety very seriously. Thankfully this incident was isolated.”
