Lancashire Telegraph Business Awards: Environment

A FURNITURE firm established in Victorian times took the Environment Award after leading the way with cutting-edge green initiatives.

J and J Ormerod Plc, (JJO Plc), Lee Road, Bacup, have spent the past two years saving energy, increasing recycling rates and reducing waste.

All the hard work paid off when they took the Lancashire Telegraph title.

And now bosses plan to make the firm even more green, by minimising all forms of energy and even not using any gas at all next year.

Production director of the business Bob Myers said the changes were about doing the right thing environmentally, not saving money.

He said: “In the last 18 months to two years we have strived to achieve all we have achieved and it would not have been possible without the help of the workforce.

“All the innovations with regards to the environment have come into fruition.”

On receiving the award, James Casey, health and safety environmental manager who has worked tirelessly to encourage employees to go green, said: “I’m speechless. It means so much. To receive this shows the importance of what we do.”

JJO Plc, which employs 420 staff and has manufactured and distributed kitchen, bedroom and bathroom furniture sine 1876, says a third of employees cycle to work or car share following a drive by bosses.
