Blackburn shopping centre pledges support to independent retailers

THE Mall Blackburn has pledged its support to Independent Retailer Month.

Throughout July, it will drum up support for the global campaign on its Facebook page, twitter profile, and website, as well as in the centre itself.

The aim is to raise awareness, and drive all-important footfall to help independent retailers continue to provide exceptional choice, and excellent value, to the people of Blackburn and beyond. Loraine Jones, general manager at The Mall Blackburn, said: “We’re delighted to support this campaign and are looking forward to celebrating it throughout the month.

“Independent retailers play a vital role in our shopping centre and within Blackburn Market, providing shoppers with a unique offer that complements our other stores.”

Parking charges or otherwise, this is a great gesture of support and a step in the right direction.

Blackburn, like so many towns, is a boring shopping experience - totally cloned except for the market. A weekly visit to Morrisons and a quick visit to the market then home again unless, on rare occasions I need to visit the building society or to buy something else.
Variety is the spice of life but cloned town centres are sterile areas to be avoided at all costs.

I've stopped shopping in Blackburn along with lots of other people I know. Always shopped at Morrisons ever since it opened but their standards have dropped badly over the last 6 months - their shop floor staff have no respect for their Customers unlike Asda or Tesco. I used to pop over to the market after shopping at Morrisons not any more!!

Blackburn now has the shops but lacks the restaurants, not everyone wants a cafe or the postal order. We need things such as Pizza Express, Zizzi's, Zinc Bar and Grill places that will attract people to come have some lunch aswellas shop and spend more time. The more people that come the more businesses will come.

We need to support all shops in our town centre to stop further closures of small retail shops.Small retailers have suffered in falling sales, lack of free parking and has lost grounds to out of town supertores and retail parks.Yes we do need good food outlets and more stores such as bookstores and more big name retailers which the Mall needs to attract. We are behind Preston,Bolton and Manchester.
