Proposal to double size of Blackburn-based car park

First published in Business

A CAR park at a Blackburn-based forecourt operator could double in size if plans are given the green light by the borough council.

Euro Garages, based at Euro House, in Haslingden Road, want to expand the car park from 69 to 124 spaces, with 51 extra car spaces, and four more disability spaces, on the south east and south west boundaries of the site.

When the development was implemented in 2009, it was found that six spaces at the side of the on-site Starbucks drive-thru could not be provided because of the width of the access way adjacent to it.

Four spaces at the back of the petrol filling station shop had to be omitted because they obstructed the access way.

Euro Garages also removed 19 spaces in front of their new national headquarters for aesthetic reasons, and to provide a drop-off point for clients.

As the petrol forecourt was trading higher than expected, the number of parking spaces was found to be insufficient.

A decision will be made by Blackburn with Darwen Council in coming weeks.

I'm not too concerned about the plans by Euro Garageas, in fact I think they are an excellent example of a well run business. What does continue to concern me though is the REPEATED mistakes the council keep making when allowing more developments along Haslingden Road. Why is the carriageway not FOUR lanes all the way from the M65 to KFC? Two lanes is nowhere near enough to cope with the ever growing demands placed on this once rural B road. The problem is only going to get WORSE in September when the new school opens across from KFC. This road is forever clogged up by traffic from the hospital and shadsworth industrial estate EVERY day. All that is needed is to move the white lines across in most of the road to make FOUR lanes outide DW gym and Cobham House and a little bit of widening of the road in others.
