Barrowford business hit by flood

A SPECIALITY off-licence that had been open just over a week has been forced to close for a few days after a flood.

Turners, in Gisburn Road, Barrowford, is likely to be closed until Wednesday or Thursday, after water started pouring into the shop from the bar above on Sunday evening.

The shop, which sells wine, coffee and cheese, is run by husband and wife team Steve and Jane Turner, and had been open only ten days.

Mrs Turner said: “It is disappointing but we’re hoping it’s just a minor setback. It is a shame because the reaction to the opening from the locals has been fantastic.

“I had to go out and sort a new carpet on Monday morning, the current one was wet through and it needed changing before it started smelling.

“Hopefully that will be the worst of the damage, we’ve lost a few cheeses we import from France, but all the other stock has survived and the rest of the shop will dry out.”

Andrew Bannister, landlord at the building, including the bar where the flood originated from, said he believed it was caused by a burst pipe but couldn’t say any more.

Mr Turner, who used to be a partner at the Sparrowhawk pub, in Fence, said: “We left the shop at about 4.30pm on Sunday and then got a call at 9pm explaining what was happening.

“When we got here there was torrents of water flooding in, and a couple of fire engines were here helping to get rid of it.

“We only just had the shop fitted and a carpet laid so it’s frustrating really. We’ve had to replace the carpet and wait for the insurance to come through as we need to open again as quickly as possible.”

I was in the shop only the other day, gonna be a regular haunt for me I reckon. The bottle of wine i purchased was far superior to the tosh you can get from the supermarkets and cheaper also!
